  • Is respectful of your time.

  • Listens to and responds to your questions in understandable, non-jargon language so you can make informed decisions.

  • Is scientifically up to date.

  • Doesn’t mind if you get a second opinion.

  • Doesn’t make you feel embarrassed or stupid for asking questions.

  • Treats you as a partner in care, rather than a recipient.

  • Returns phone calls or emails promptly.

  • Makes appointments easy to make, with minimal waiting times.

  • Makes you feel comfortable enough to have an open and honest discussion.

A not-so-good doctor:

  • Is dismissive of your questions and concerns.

  • Leaves you feeling unsatisfied and unsure of your treatment and other issues.

  • Doesn’t welcome second opinions.

  • Is disrespectful of you, family members, office staff.

  • Makes you feel too uncomfortable to have an open, honest discussion.

  • Has State Medical Board disciplinary violations.

  • Makes it difficult to book appointments (it can take weeks or months).

  • Isn’t available to you during off hours.
